What If It’s Us meets To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before inthis upbeat and heartfelt boy-meets-boy romance that feels like a modern twist on a ’90s rom-com! If you know me you are aware that I’m not much of a television watcher. Especially since the invention of subscription services - mainly because I’m terrified that I might become one of these people . . . . KVW: Surprisingly, a lot. The funny thing is, I attended a prep academy for, I think it was six months of my life, and I was surrounded by these extremely wealthy people. And it's such an interesting dynamic. I know a lot of people say that they didn't really get why Kai would feel othered, [because] rich people in an academy are really friendly. They know your name, they show an interest, [but] I remember one memory that comes to mind where a girl was having her sweet 16, and she came with invitations and we'd hung out and stuff, but she invited a select few. Those were the people that were the in crowd. Abhorrent Admirer: Shannon who constantly pursues Bryson during the time he's secretly dating Kai. Fat chance in hell as he's not only head over heels for Kai but she was rightly punished after exposing their relationship. Oh, and all this in the span of three days. (The whole books takes two weeks, so we don’t have a lot of time.)

But Kai Sheridan never expected Bryson to say yes to him. As the days go by, he discovers there’s more to Bryson beneath the surface, and dating him begins to feel less like an act and more like the real thing. Kai knows how the story of a gay boy liking someone straight ends. With his heart on the line, he’s awkwardly trying to navigate senior year at school, at home, and in the closet, all while grappling with the fact that this “relationship” will last only five days. After all, Bryson Keller is popular, good-looking, and straight . . . right?

The more time they spend being fake boyfriends, Kai realizes there’s so much more to Bryson than he thought. And even though he knows Bryson is straight and this whole fake relationship thing is just for fun, Kai starts falling for him. But a little piece of him can’t help but wonder. Is Bryson straight? Is it just for fun? Any of those things would make me dislike a book. And yet, even with all that? After those amazing last 10 chapters that made me laugh and cry, I will relisten to Date Me, Bryson Keller over and over again. To once again relive Kai’s struggles. To once again watch him find home with the best looking guy in his high school, a romantic guy who truly notices and watches and understands Kai. To once again watch his parents rise up and fight for him. And, as annoying as it is, to also see that those who caused the problem will probably have nothing happen to them. Because that’s unfortunately how life is. (no matter how much I would have loved to see Shannon flattened) MC: It's so exciting to get these different perspectives. Like, yes, we got the American story first, and now we're going to get that second one that feels more home to you and more natural to you. I'm excited to see what you have next for us. MC: I definitely agree. This feels just like one of those '90s rom-coms, which, who doesn't love them? Everyone knows about the dare: Each week, Bryson Keller must date someone new–the first person to ask him out on Monday morning. Few think Bryson can do it. He may be the king of

And if you think there’s any chance of our old fat asses indulging in some “Netflix and Chill” you are sadly mistaken . . . . I thought a day of this nature would only make sense in that environment, because in a public school I don't think it would matter that much. But rich people are weird, and I think it invited the potential for this story to unfold. A large part of the moderate angst in this story was derived from Kai's fears of coming out, which sadly, turned out to be fairly well-founded when the shit inevitably hit the fan. MC: I love the tropes. They, like we were saying, make the story just feel that much more rich, more relatable, and they add that extra layer. There's so much you can do with tropes and they’re so much fun. What If It's Us meets To All the Boys I've Loved Before in this upbeat and heartfelt boy-meets-boy romance that feels like a modern twist on a '90s rom-com! Date Me, Bryson Keller is a love letter to the 90’s/early 2000 Rom-Coms that I grew up on. It’s the story of seventeen-year-old, gay-but-not-out Kai Sheridan, who asks popular Bryson Keller out on a date as part of a dare, which changes both their lives forever. The book is best described as a coming out story but with a rom-com sensibility. Readers can expect a tale of first love. There will be trials and tribulations, you may cry but you will also laugh, and I promise that this gay love story has a happy ending. Date Me, Bryson Keller feels nostalgic for the 80s/90s romantic comedies but with a very needed queer twist. I couldn’t put it down! What inspired this fun story? And do you have a favorite romcom? why all the ex-girlfriends/prospective girlfriends had to be a pain? or not memorable at all? actually I'm mostly mad at this part: But once their fake (and secret) dating is underway, it swiftly acquires a momentum that sweeps them both into uncharted territory. Kai is obviously the best example of that, though. We’re told (by him, since the book is written in first person pov) that he’s shy, but then we literally not once get to see it. We’re told he’s not popular, but his two best friends are part of the popular crowd and he gets invited to parties thrown by those kids, and the most popular guy in school knows his name. It’s impossible to pin down anything actually real about Kai. (Apart from the fact that he’s a pretentious asshole, like a lot of teenagers are, but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t actually author’s intention.)

Date Me, Bryson Keller is a 2020 LGBT young adult novel written by Kevin Van Whye about the budding relationship of two male high schoolers and the obstacles they have to overcome. I did love Bryson Keller. He was the perfect boyfriend, supporting, caring - a nice understanding cinnamon roll. MC: Definitely. For those who don't know, Date Me, Bryson Keller features a dare, a secret relationship, and ultimately now, one of my newest favorite couples. To set up the premise a little bit more, after expressing a disbelief in love and relationships, Bryson Keller, the local it-boy of Fairvale Academy, is dared to date someone new each week. But the catch is that he's not allowed to be the person to ask. It always goes to the first girl who asks him out on Monday morning. But all of that changes that last week when our other hero, Kai Anderson, asks him out. And then the entire game changes. Everyone knows about the dare: Each week, Bryson Keller must date someone new - the first person to ask him out on Monday morning. Few think Bryson can do it. He may be the king of Fairvale Academy, but he's never really dated before. This YA story was without a doubt one of the most fluffy, adorable, feel-good tales that I've read in the last year, and I completely fell in love with both Kai and Bryson.

Third Wheel: Shannon unknowingly but irritatingly interrupts Bryson and Kai's dates at several points of the book as she wants to become closer to the former. Kai calls her by the trope when she tries stalking Bryson at The Graces concert even though she isn't a fan. In addition to his struggles navigating senior year and at home inside the closet, Kai has these newfound feelings from secretly going out with Bryson. Dating him becomes less of an act and more like the real deal after discovering there's more to Bryson than meets the eye. But Kai knows better. MC: Exactly. It's escapism at its finest. And this is an own-voices story. You add that extra element. It's an LGBTQIA+ story, which is something that those '90s rom-coms didn't have, so it's taking that medium and that mode of storytelling and reinventing it. Also, Kai wasn't initially all closet case swoony over Bryson. Instead, for years, he had been interested in one of Bryson's terminally-straight soccer teammates, Isaac.
